Rawls Family Georgia History George Bynum Rawls (b 4 Feb 1823, d 30 Dec 1910), son of John Rawl, married Mary Emmaline Bernhard (b Nov 1834 d ca 1910) in January, 1853. George had moved from Lexington, SC about 1844 to join his grandfather, 2 uncles (Jesse & Joseph) and 3 aunts (Mary, Celia & Barbara) according to an article in the Lexington Dispatch 1 Feb 1911. He was 21 years old at the time and his family had been living near Haralson, Coweta Co, GA for five years, being among the first white settlers in the county (source: History of Coweta County from 1825 to 1880 by W. U. Anderson). They were active in the Mt. Pilgrim Lutheran Church of Haralson. On 1 February 1855 George took the seat on the church council vacated by the death of his grandfather (Jacob Rawl, Jr.). George would serve two terms on the church council, 1855-1857 & 1859-1861 (source: Records of Mt. Pilgrim Lutheran Church). In December of 1866 George moved his family of six children to a farm near Luella, Henry Co, GA. After moving to Henry County, George joined St. Johns Lutheran Church just across the river in Spalding County. George and Emaline had nine children in all and made their living as farmers. George continued to live near Luella until his death on 30 Dec 1910 and was buried by his friend Baptist minister J.J. Farmer (source: Lexington Dispatch). He is buried in what is now called the Bernhard (Standard) cemetery near Hampton, GA. George and Emaline's children were Melissa (b 19 Nov 1853), John William (b 1856), Benjamin Franklin (b 18 Apr 1858, d 17 Oct 1924), Jacob (Jake) Sylvester Rawls (b 29 Mar 1864, d 2 Jun 1955), Maryellyn (Molly), Fanny (b Jan 1865), Lola, Ida Mae (b 1872) and Anntonette (b Oct 1876). Jacob (Jake) Sylvester Rawls (b 29 Mar 1864, d 2 Jun 1955) married Stella Mollie Sims (b 21 Nov 1882, m 27 Dec 1908, d 16 Jul 1965). They made their living in Henry Co, GA as farmers their entire life. Their children were George Sims (b 19 May 1911, d 16 Jun 1972), John Benjamin, Mary Emmaline, Mildred (b 6 Oct 1915), Antonette and Jacob (Frank) Franklin Rawls. |
